According to the country's tradition, which began in the pre-Hispanic period, this cemeteries are decorated to welcome the spirits of the dead that on the nights of days 01 and November 2 return to visit loved ones.

Tzintzuntzan, 02/11/2018: Family gathered in front of a tomb in the cemetery located in Tzintzuntzan in the region of Patzcuaro, in the Mexican state of Michoacan. On November 1st and 2nd, the local community gathers in the cemetery to celebrate Day of the Dead, when, according to Mexican belief, the souls of the dead return to visit their families. During the celebration the tombs are adorned with flowers, candles and the favorite foods of the deceased as a way to welcome their souls in a joyful way.

In the early hours of November 1st to November 2nd, the local community gathers in the cemetery to celebrate Day of the Dead, when, according to Mexican belief, the souls of the dead return to visit their families. During the celebration the tombs are adorned with flowers, candles and the favorite foods of the deceased as a way to welcome their souls in a joyful way.

(Resubmission note: Altars like this are temporary structures built by the thousands all over Mexico for the Day of the Dead festival in homes and public places. They often contain bread, fruit, prepared food, flowers, and other perishable items. They are taken down and the perishable items are consumed or disposed of immediately after the conclusion of the festival. This one is vary elaborate since it was built in the zócalo of downtown Oaxaca, but it was dismantled by November 3, 2018. Something entirely different will be built next year. Suggesting that these displays would be copyrighted would be like supposing a bunch of flowers at a grave would be copyrighted).

The Day of the Dead is a time for the dead to return home and visit loved ones, feast on their favorite foods and listen to their favorite music.
