Aglais urticae is a common resident. Migrants are also often seen. Its distribution probably has not changed during the last century. However, the Dutch Monitoring Scheme shows a decline in numbers in the 1990s; the cause is not known.
Adults can be seen looking for nectar in gardens, parks and on roadside verges.
The caterpillars feed on the smaller plants of Urtica dioica in very sunny, open spots.
The species flies in two generations from the beginning of March until the end of October. The adult butterfly hibernates in cool, dark places, such as barns, attics, or hollow trees.

The Picture is made along a small Brook in the Eifel (Germany) in halfway August 2021.

The Small Tortoiseshell is one of our most-familiar butterflies, appearing in gardens throughout the British Isles.

Pyronia tithonus is a common resident in the Netherlands and has its centre of occurrence in the North-Eastern and Southern Part of the Netherlands.
Habitat: Gatekeeper occurs mainly in rough, scrubby, flowery grassland vegetation, often in half-shaded places, usually with some woodland nearby. Also in heath land with some trees.
Flying Season:
It flies in one generation from mid-July until mid-August and hibernates as a half-grown caterpillar.

This Picture is made in the Dwingelderveld (Drenthe) in August of 2022.
