The historic Mission San Xavier del Bac situated on the Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation, affectionately known as “White Dove of the Desert,” stands in stark contrast to the clear blue cloudless sky. Considered to be the finest example of Spanish Colonial architecture in United States, it has an elegant white stucco Moorish-inspired exterior with ornately decorated massive carved mesquite-wood doors, numerous bell towers and domes. The interior contains paintings, carvings, frescoes and statues of apostles and saints in dazzling colors. Gardens with native cacti and various succulents are strategically planted adding to the peace and tranquility of the Mission. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960.
